Repaying my debt

We spent the day at he Grand Canyon today. It's the third time that I have been there, but it's also been 15 years since I was there last. The first time I went, I was 22 years old, and I had just started my gig as a full-time volunteer with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. I was only making $75 a month in living expenses, so money was tight. It's not like I was living on the streets or didn't have things like food, clothing, mileage reimbursement, and health care. I had all of those things. I was working for the Mesa Senior Center as an Outreach Worker, and the deal they had with the JVC was that they would pay my share of room and board, food, etc. in exchange for my full time employment. It was a win-win situation for everyone. Living on $75 a month is hard. Especially when you are 22 and used to living any way you want.

My first excursion to the Grand Canyon was a camping trip. It was first time I ever camped, so I didn't have any equipment (read: sleeping bag), but I think I borrowed one from someone. There were a bunch of us on this camping trip. People from the Mesa House (where I lived) and the Phoenix and Tucson Houses. I don't remember everything about the trip, but I have some pictures and I know I have a journal back home with some notes I wrote. One thing I remember was taking a hiking guide on one of the trails. The suggested donation was $.25. It's not that I didn't have a quarter to spare, I just didn't have any money with me on the hike. I made a pledge to the donation box that someday I would return and make the donation.

I repaid my debt today. What is the interest is on $.25 over 17 years???
