Change

I'll bet you that word has been used millions of times today. On TV, in newspapers, on the radio, on the Internet, spoken from the mouths of many. Change. I don't need to belabor the point of why. It's obvious. Today is January 20, 2009. The changing of the guards has occurred. Millions of people--maybe even a few--stood outside in the cold, watched televisions, streamed feeds on the Internet, to witness the event. Cyndi asked me if I ever thought I would be President. Never. Not even as a child. The thought has never crossed my mind. While I think I can motivate people, while I think I can help people achieve goals, I'm just not smart enough, untainted enough, political enough, to run a country. Plus, I've always felt I was too short to be President. I wonder who the shortest President was in history. I'm guessing, no one has been as short as me.

I wish my children were old enough to understand what happened today. We "made" them watch the inauguration, maybe against their will. Neither of them complained, but Frederic was in the middle of a wicked solo Monopoly game (you read it right), and Lily would have been happy just jumping around the room. Sometimes things stick. You never know what goes on in the heads of children. We may have inadvertently created a memory for our kids. They may think back fondly on this day. They may remember it as a time when something on TV was so important, we had to take some time. They saw the crowds, they heard the words, they saw Cyndi cry, and me stand speechless. Change comes when we least expect it. Change comes when we most need it.

Change.
