Paying it Forward

Good deeds are often infectious. Smile at a stranger and his expression changes. The stranger smiles at a friend and her expression changes. Hopefully the cycle continues. A simple smile turns or strengthens an emotion.

Over the past few weeks, Lily has been selling Girl Scout Cookies. When I say "selling" I really mean that she has been doing most of the work. Maybe it's because her dad is a sales guy, but I am a firm believer that when the kids have something to hawk for a sport or a club they belong to, it does them a disservice to do the work for them. I'm certainly not saying that our way is the right way, but Lily successfully sold 92 boxes of cookies; she made all of the calls to buyers herself.

Of course, she had the GlenGarry leads. I put a feeler email out to people, informing them that Lily was selling cookies. I made a list of interested buyers and their phone numbers, and Lily placed calls to about 20 people. When she called, she clearly identified herself, shared the list of cookies for sale, and took the orders. Tuesday night, we went to pick up the cookies, came home and sorted the boxes, and she is helping us collect the money and deliver the product. I know she feels great about the effort she is putting into this project.

Lily's efforts have seemed to continue past the selling process. She sold about 12 boxes of cookies to people who live out of state or simply wanted to be part of helping the cause. We were told by these buyers to "donate" the cookies.

Lily, Cyndi and Frederic knew exactly what to do. They have been delivering meals on wheels to home bound seniors for almost six years (nearly all of Lily's life). Every two weeks, the three of them (and sometimes Rex) pick up hot meals, and deliver them to people are their route. I often hear stories about these people and about how grateful they are for not only the nourishment for their stomachs, but for the few minutes of companionship they receive. These people are typically physically unable to prepare meals and are often from low income households.

Today, the people on their route received something extra: Girl Scout Cookies. As I understand, they were extremely well received. Cyndi took pictures of some of the recipients and their gratitude is not hard to clearly see.

Lily in Brownies = Selling and Buying Girl Scout Cookies = Meals on Wheels Deliveries = Donation of Cookies = People feeling good about giving and receiving.

With all of this good stuff going on today, I could hardly pass up an opportunity to do something nice today myself. A friend of mine, Shay Brackney (we have known each other since the 7th grade, she is the only person I continue to talk with from that far back, and she is the person who coaxed me--um, suggested--to begin a blog, and who can be found at getkinetic.typepad.com), wrote her 500th post yesterday. An amazing success. In honor of this milestone, Shay decided to:

So I cannot ignore her quest. Here's the gist of what she is doing and what I am going to do as well:
