When I see old pictures of myself, I try to think back and remember the mindset of the person staring back at me. First thing I wonder is, "really?" I mean, come on, those shorts are loud and scream for attention. That was the style in 1990, I guess. I don't remember taking this picture specifically, but I do remember the event.
This was Resident Assistant training in Lake Geneva, WI in August 1990. I was a junior at Loyola University and we were preparing ourselves for the coming school year in our roles as Resident Assistants at the only male dorm at Loyola, Campion Hall.
In the picture is myself, Bob Porter, Mark LaFrenz, Chris Connolley, Andy Palombo, Pat Unzicker, Ned Budd, Scott Brummel, unknown because I cannot remember his name, Ken Washington, and John Mulligan. I am still friends with five of the guys, the closest being Bob.
When I see the picture, I think about the dreams I must of had at that time. I think about the excitement I felt, ready to embark on a new level of college life. I remember the "trust exercise" we did where we had to fall back into the arms of our friends.
Life seemed so difficult, at times, back then. Nothing could prepare us for the things we would encounter as RA's that year. Not some cheesy trust exercises, not staying at a resort in Lake Geneva
The only thing I am sure of is the bond I formed with a group of guys; so tight, it would be tested months later, and prove to be as strong as we expected.
